The Government of Canada co-partnered with Visionwall Corporation on the design, development and demonstration of a building integrated photovoltaic curtainwall system that permits the curtainwall frame to be used as a conduit for photovoltaic wiring. A successful prototype led to a 33.5 kW BIPV array within a 812 m~2 high performance curtainwall installed in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories Canada. The measured performance of the array was lower than estimated, however the electrical production reduction can be reconciled with the estimates. The curtainwall system is performing as expected and is providing in excess of 5% of the building electrical load, which is within estimates. Following completion of improvements, production should increase in excess of estimates. The system will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 137 tonnes per year.
