Even after many decades of efforts and experience, there are still many cases of PV rural electrificationprogrammes not achieving a long term impact due to failures after system implementation. However, the reasonsfor these failures are seldom of technical nature, but lie in the preparation and organization of the programme. This paper examines a successful rural electrification programme realized in Kiribati, an island state in the PacificOcean, where a battery lifetime of 10 years has been achieved.
