An optical model was developed to gain insight in the optics of thin-film PV cells over the entire solarspectrum and to determine the fraction of absorbed solar irradiance. Both numerically and experimentally thespectrally resolved absorption factor was determined for a set of configurations, ranging from substrate to amorphoussilicon cell, and a very good agreement was found. Using the model, the AM1.5 absorption factors of an amorphoussilicon cell, a micromorph silicon tandem cell and a copper indium diselenide cell were found to be as high as 87%,90% and 94%, respectively. The sensitivity of these numbers to the degree of optical confinement was investigatedas well.
