A simple and direct procedure for estimating the preconsolidation stress (σp) from constant rate of strain consolidation (CRS) excess pore pressure data is described. For soft clays, excess pore pressure (ub) measured at the base of a CRS test specimen normalized by total vertical stress (σv) almost always reaches a distinct minimum value during the test. The vertical effective stress (σ1v) at the minimum value of ub/σv corresponds well with σ1p as determined from commonly used interpretation methods such as Casagrande construction and the strain energy method. The method of σ1p = σv at the minimum ub/σv is straight forward and objective; whereas most existing σ1p interpretation methods use log scales, require graphical construction procedures and often subjective interpretation of the construction. Examples are given in the paper for a variety of soft clays from test sites located worldwide.
