The scratch behavior of ion-exchanged alkali aluminosilicate glass was investigated using sliding indentation. It is demonstrated that the evolution of crack systems originating in the subsurface, i.e. median and lateral cracks, differs for glass having a high surface compressive stress and a deep layer of compression when compared to non-strengthened glass. In non-strengthened glasses, the median crack forms prior to lateral cracking systems. In highly ion-exchanged glasses, the median crack is suppressed and lateral crack systems form preferentially. At levels of ion-exchange that suppress the median crack prior to the formation of lateral cracks, the outward propagation of lateral cracks does not appear to be influenced by the compressive stress.
