Different chitosan types were sterilized by electron irradiation. Chitosans in solution were completely degraded by irradiation. Irradiation of chitosan powders reduced the molar masses in dose dependence. For longer molecule chains, a more intensive cleaving effect resulted. Thus, irradiation could be used to sterilize chitosan powders or to develop new types of constant quality.
