Developing sustainable water resources requires an understanding of the local and regional water cycles in order to make plans and management decisions for the benefit of the society and economy. Unfortunately, in many parts of the world the basic water cycle data for planning and management are sparse, unreliable or nonexistent. However, recent advances in Earth remote sensing are providing repetitive and comprehensive measures of many of the water cycle fluxes and storages. This paper describes the types of information and data possible from satellite remote sensing. The paper concludes with recommended steps one might take to realize the benefits of incorporating satellite measurements into a water resources management and sustainability plan.
