The ability to launch missiles from a submerged submarine without marinization ofthe payload is enabled though the Concentric Canister Launcher. Water piercingenables a missile to “fly dry” in a vaporous rocket exhaust jet during its ascent to thesurface. The exhaust jet from the CCL pierces the water and creates a dry column ofmissile exhaust gas from the muzzle of the launcher to the surface. The concept wasfirst demonstrated through computer modeling. Sub scale launchers were built andtested in aquariums. A missile propelled by a 2.75” rocket motor was launched andrecovered dry from a submerged CCL. The scale was then doubled and an 8’ long x300 lb. missile propelled by a 5” JATO motor was launched with 20’ of water overthe launcher. The jet trajectory and launch environment are discussed.
