Resolving Legacy Material Disposition Issues Required to De-inventory the Y-12 National Security Complex’s 64-Year-Old Storage Facility
The Y-12 National Security Complex, a facility of the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration, is preparing to move its enriched uranium into a newly constructed storage facility, the Highly Enriched Uranium Materials Facility. This paper describes the issues and potential solutions to allow legacy material and containers in Y-12’s current storage facility to be repackaged, moved, or dispositioned—a process termed de-inventory. In addition, the current schedule and the cost restrictions are discussed briefly.
