Cement Kiln Dust (CKD) is a powdery by-product of the Portland cement manufacturing process. High disposal costs coupled with a shortage in landfill space has prompted recent search into alternative uses of CKD. The beneficial chemical and physical properties of CKD offer its potential to stabilize marginal soils. This paper presents some results of the investigation into the engineering properties of Palouse Loess soil modified with varying amounts of CKD. The results are compared with the same soil modified using Portland cement.The addition of CKD and Portland cement is found to increase the optimum water content but to decrease the maximum dry unit weight of the mix soils. Their addition also resulted in significant improvement in unconfined compressive strength and modulus of elasticity. CKD also has high surface area which facilitates the absorption of water off soil particles. This would be beneficial for field compaction of wet soils. Results of Atterberg limit tests showed that plasticity index increased initially, but decreased at higher percentage of additives.
