A GENERALIZED SYNTHESIS OF CARBON / METAL OR METAL OXIDE NANOCOMPOSITES AND THEIR CORRESPONDING METAL OXIDE HOLLOW OR MESOPOROUS SPHERES USING A HYDROTHERMAL APPROACH
Using hydrothermal carbonization of carbohydrates in the presence of water soluble metal salts we can easily obtain carbon/metal nanocomposites in one step process. In the case of salts containing metals with a low oxidation potential, metal oxide nanoparticles are formed in situ during the hydrothermal carbonization process. These are then positioned in the hydrophilic shell of the resulting carbon spheres. Instead, when using metal salts containing high oxidation potentials, they can be reduced by the aldehyde groups of the carbohydrate prior and during the polymerization process. The resulting metallic nanoparticles are then placed in the hydrophobic carbon core. Thus, using a very easy 1 step procedure, two different types of carbon nanocomposites can be obtained. Subsequent removal of the carbon leads to metal oxide hollow spheres with two different morphologies. When the metal oxide nanoparticles are positioned in the hydrophilic shell hollow metal spheres are obtained and when the metal nanoparticles are located in the hydrophobic core, calcination leads to mesoporous metal oxide spheres.
