Wood is the most common material used in residential construction in NorthAmerica. Structural design of such buildings follows either a prescriptive code or an engineeredcode to withstand live, dead, wind and seismic loads. Wood has generally performed well underthese loads but wood buildings may also experience moisture intrusion over its life. Over thelast 30 years, residential buildings have become increasingly energy efficient and airtight.Therefore, it may be necessary to design these buildings for moisture loads as well. The paperdiscusses moisture hazard characterization and would propose performancedescriptor related to moisture.
