Blast Hardened Retrofit Details for Petrochemical Buildings

This paper presents actual cases for evaluating existing buildings within petrochemicalfacilities subjected to postulated vapor cloud explosion blast scenarios. An evaluationwill estimate the expected damage (i.e., Light, Moderate, Severe, Failure) to eachbuilding component that makes up the exterior building envelope. If an unacceptablecumulative overall building damage is assigned and a decision is made not to de-occupythe building then upgrades to the building to significantly enhance its current blastcapacity are required. Based on operational, construction, and existing cable and controlpanel configurations, a cost effective retrofit option is selected. The paper will describeseveral upgrade techniques such as building a new building around the existing buildingand adding reinforcement bars or steel posts to exterior concrete masonry walls andframing a new steel frame roof over the existing roof. The discussed retrofits are basedon analytical dynamic non-linear models that were used in their design. Some of theseanalytical models have been validated with test data produced using the BakerRisk shocktube.
