摘要

This paper is focused on the Jeffries–Matusita (JM) based spectralcharacterization of archaeological features performed by using satellite QuickBirdimagery. A quantitative evaluation of spectral separability of archaeological marks andtheir surroundings is carried out by using one of the most widely used indices the JMstatistically distance. The selected study area, located in the South of Italy, is related toarchaeological marks observed over surfaces with different soil characteristics andvegetation covers. The approach we adopted in this investigation can be fruitfully appliedbefore performing automatic classification for the automatic extraction of archaeologicalfeatures.
