The US health care delivery system is facing an aging population experiencing multiple chronic diseases, whichneed more hospital inpatient care. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between use of inpatient care andchronic diseases using patient discharge data from an urban hospital system. The results from negative binomialregression reveal that discharge rate for patients with congestive heart failure or diabetes is significantly lower thanthat for patients with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or hypertension. However, thedischarge rate for patients with congestive heart failure is not significantly different from that for diabetes patients.
