Power generation tests using a single-cell SOFC fueled by coalderivedsyngas were conducted under a constant voltage of -0.8 Vversus air (reference). Changes in current densities andconcentrations of major gaseous components such as H_2, and CO,and sulfur-contained components were monitored. The syngas wasproduced in the steam gasification of pulverized coal in alaboratory-scale fluidized-bed gasifier. The syngas was suppliedto SOFC anode with different gas cleaning conditions,with/without filtration and water washing. It was possible togenerate electrical current for several hours with the coal-derivedsyngas and we found that the degradation behavior of SOFC wasnotably affected by the gas cleaning conditions. A SEM-EDXanalysis confirmed the micro-scale change in morphology of theSOFC anode. Sintering and growth of Ni particles over the anodelayer suggested the eutectic melting of Ni might be induced bysome impurities contained in the coal derived syngas.
