This paper proposed a high power density integrated electronic ballast for low wattage high intensity discharge (HID) lamp. Packaging and integration technologies are explored to fully utilize the three-dimensional space, therefore to improve the power density of the system. This paper focuses on the implementation of power passive integration, including the integrated EMI filter, the integrated LC series resonator serving as the ignitor, and integrated LC output filter. Combining active integration technologies, the proposed integrated ballast is projected to achieve doubled power density compared with the discrete implementation. A prototype with integrated passive components was developed, and the preliminary experimental results show that the integrated ballast can achieve almost same electrical performance as the discrete ballast. A thermal simulation model of the integrated ballast is built using IDEAS simulation tool, and appropriate thermal management methods are investigated. Experimental verification of various thermal management methods is provided.
