摘要

Nondestructive evaluation of cultural heritage materials has become an important investigative and research tool used by conservators and conservation scientists. Over the past 10 years, there has been a dramatic rise in the use of nondestructive/ noninvasive portable (handheld) X-ray fluorescence (NDT-XRF) analysis in conservation and other cultural heritage applications. NDT-XRF is non-invasive, enables elemental compositional characterization without sampling, maintains future analytical potential, and addresses the preservation and ethical concerns of interested stakeholders including archaeologists, conservators, conservation scientists, curators, descendant communities and other cultural heritage professionals. While many researchers have commented on the limitations of the technique for the analysis of inhomogeneous, low-fired ceramic materials, NDT-XRF analysis is never used as the only investigative tool within the framework of conservation and conservation science research. Meaningful interpretation of NDT-XRF data is based on the careful construction of analytical protocols, as well as the comparison of multiple types of collected data including visual observation (macro- and microscopic), conservation and curatorial information, archaeological provenience and documentation, cultural and language studies, and many other types of information.NDT-XRF research of archaeological ceramics has shaped planning of the permanent exhibit, "Journeys of Ancestors: Migration in the American Southwest" at the Arizona State Museum, University of Arizona. In particular, NDT-XRF data collected from over 200 ceramic artifacts has helped to answer questions pertaining to: (a) the materials and methods of artist manufacture, (b) changes that might occur as a result of archaeological process or traditional use, (c) evidence of traded raw materials or completed objects, and, (d) movement of people and objects on the landscape. The integration of NDT-XRF in conservation and conservation science investigations of selected ceramic objects has redefined exhibition content and research results will be incorporated into exhibition wall text, web applications, and a technical catalog. Overall, NDT-XRF analysis has contributed to the interpretation and understanding of archaeological ceramic materials and technologies and their relationship to migration in the American Southwest.
