摘要

This paper investigatesthe cost structure of the total, door-to-door chain of integrators by means of a cost simulation model. The model looks at a micro-level to the cost structure of an air express shipment with specific characteristics and focuses on three parts of the multimodal, door-to-door chain: pick-up and delivery (PUD), hub & gateway operations and air line-haul operations. By using scenarios, the impact of a change in one or a combination of cost items or cost drivers on the total costs is quantified.The results show the importance of PUD in the total costs. Concerning air line-haul costs, large cost differences are found, both for destinations in the integrator’s own network and for third-party airlift.Furthermore, this paper examines to what extent the integrators’ capacity management strategy is in line with their cost structure.
