Assessing airport competition through catchment area analysis in Taiwan

摘要

The research would like to analyze the relations between the characteristics of catchment areas and the competition between respective airports. By means of visualizing (isochrones map) and quantizing tools (competition index introduced by Scotti, et al and market power indicator created by Maertens), the research derives different methodologies with local empirical data from Taiwan furthermore. At the center of East Asia, northern Taiwan is a densely-populated metropolis with two civil international airports: a smaller urban airport, TSA and a larger rural airport, TPE. Both airports consist of overlapping catchment areas. Each tool reveals certain aspects of the characteristic of catchment areas. The result of each tool is verified against actual ticket fare. The pros and cons to each method learnt during the process are also reviewed and the further improvements are explored.
