2014 is a historical year that marks the 70th anniversary of the Conference in Chicago. TheChicago Convention was borne out of the ashes of one of the bloodiest wars. In recognition of this, this paper considers the continuous conflicts that have surrounded commercial air operations. A reflective view of historical events and related responses is provided, which argues that the international air law framework has not kept pace with the evolution of the industry. The reactive actions of governments and international bodies are questioned and it is argued that apathy exists which creates vulnerability and risk, whilst stifling competition.
