Two construction projects involving rock socket construction in Precambrian rock were completed in the western portion of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The first project involved rock sockets drilled into the Vulcan Iron-Formation, while the second project involved construction in the Michigamme Formation, a metamorphic slate-graywacke sequence. Lessons learned include the following. Precambrian rock tends to have high strength. Core that fractures during the drilling operation might indicate high horizontal or residual stresses existing in the rock. It's important that the rock's unconfined compressive strength be determined even if significant fracturing occurs during drilling operations. When mechanical strength data indicates a wide range of rock strengths, the higher strength rock should in most cases dictate the choice of drilling equipment not the average value. And finally, dipping rock layers can cause difficult drilling operations for downhole hammers when drilling through weak and strong rock layers.
