Stack Effect of Smoke in an Old Apartment Staircase in Taiwan of China

For the purposes of lighting and ventilation, there is an opening above the gate of several old existing apartments in Taiwan of China. Taking motorcycle arson as a fire scenario, this paper proved that smoke would move into the building quickly via the opening above the gate and flow upward through the staircases, posing a serious risk whenever a motorcycle arson was committed. When the opening of the gate was moved to the bottom, the smoke distribution would be greatly improved. Images recording and laser smoke layer measurement equipment were used to measure smoke diffusion, referring to the Australian Standard, AS 4391—1999 "Smoke management systems -Hot smoke test". The images indicated that the smoke quickly entered the 1st floor staircase of the building, and spread throughout the floors. When the opening was moved to the bottom of the gate, the recorded data showed that the visibility remained greater than 100 m at the end of the experiment. That a simple improvement on the old apartments could effectively block smoke into buildings after a fire.
