H.264 standard is developed by joint video team (JVT) which is composed of video coding expert group (VCEG) of ITU-T and motion picture expert group (MPEG). Many new technologies are applied in H.264 standard for improving the encoding efficiency. In order to improve the quality of video compression,H.264/AVC adopted multi-reference frames for motion prediction. However,along with the increasing number of reference frames,multi-reference frames (MRE) would pay a heavy price on the encoding complexity. In this paper,we propose an adaptive multi-reference frames (AMRF) selection method based on information from the correlation of the neighboring macroblocks in reference frame and RD cost Experimental results show that this method can effectively reduce the complexity of encoding,while the reduction of the coding gain is almost negligible.
