The content of terpene trilactones determines the quality characteristics of Ginkgo biloba extract. One of the means to increase terpene trilactones content is the use of plant growth regulators. The objective of this article is to study the effect of ethephon on terpene trilactones photosynthesis, photosynthetic pigment, and total sugar content and in ginkgo leaves. The ginkgo seedlings were grown in the greenhouse conditions with foliar applications of 0 (control), 0.5, 1.5-1 and 2.5 I-1 ethephon. Results showed that 1.5 and 2.5 I-1 ethephon treatments significantly increased net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2 concentration, transpiration rate, and the contents of chlorophyll, carotenoids and soluble sugar in ginkgo leaves. The contents of GA, GC, BB and total terpene trilactones of the leaves were significantly increased by 1.5 and 2.5 I-1 ethephon treatments, whereas the content of GB was not significantly affected by ethephon treatment. Foliar treatment with ethephon therefore might be a useful means for improving pharmacological properties of G. biloba leaves.
