A survey on the dangerous bridge along the mountain road in south-west China revealed that various degrees of damages had occurred to the stone arch bridges that had been in service for over IO years. As these damages would affect their safety, it became the focus and the difficult part of the current research to evaluate the safety performance indicators of those stone arch bridges. With the application of multi-hierarchical fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method, the relative weight of factors in each hierarchy was determined considering various factors affecting the bridges' bearing capacity; then the ratio of the structural resistance value to the external load of the bridges in active service was obtained; and finally the bridges' safety performance evaluation indicators were determined The advantage of this evaluating system in actual project lay in its clear distinction between the important factors and the lesser ones, simplification of evaluation work and good evaluating effect.
