The Southern Hemisphere Summer Space Program (SHS-SP) was launched in January 2011 by the InternationalSpace University (ISU), in partnership with the University of South Australia (UniSA). This new program isdesigned with a particular eye to the southern hemisphere space domain and will focus on space applications, spacepolicy and space services, while giving a well rounded overview of the principles and concepts involved in spacescience, space systems engineering and technology, human space flight, space business and management and spacelegal and regulatory issues. The Tropic of Cancer is a convenient line defining the nations and regions of interest.The first session was held in January and February of 2010 in Adelaide, Australia, with 43 students from 10countries participating. This paper will present the new program, its goals, and relationship to existing ISU andUniSA educational programs. The program is an intensive, five week, live-in experience in the southern hemispheresummer, involving the international, intercultural, and interdisciplinary educational philosophy for which ISU isrenowned. The program is open to students from all nations. As in other ISU programs, students will benefit fromthe shared experience of an international, interactive working environment shared with other professionals, graduateresearchers and senior undergraduate students. Program graduates will become part of the international network ofISU alumni, faculty members and visiting lecturers (numbering more than 3,000 to date). A competitive grant fromthe Australian Space Research Program, submitted jointly by ISU and UniSA, has resulted in an award of A$475,658in financial assistance for the program over three years. These funds will be used for competitive scholarships as wellas program administration. This paper will present the structure, goals, and future directions of the program.
