This paper describes the use of a reusable horizontal takeoff and landing spaceplane developed for the suborbitalspace tourism market as a low cost, flexible and highly responsive intermediate duration microgravity laboratoryand research platform. The XP spaceplane developed by Rocketplane Global has a redundant environmental controland life support system providing a shirtsleeve environment for the crew and passengers. This capacity alsoprovides a user friendly and benign environment for experimental payloads of all kinds. In addition, researchers andpayload developers have the ability to fly with their payloads and operate them directly during the flight. The 3 to 4minutes of microgravity time experienced during the coast phase of the flight as the vehicle reaches apogee isexpected to be high quality approximating the microgravity environment of the International Space Station (ISS).Payloads intended for the ISS can be extensively tested in suborbital flights first before being manifested for theirlong duration space flights.
