Toward the Synthesis of Bactericidal Films

We report the synthesis of silver films on polished titanium and stainless steel substrate materials using a sputter deposition technique. Films were deposited as a function of cathode power, substrate temperature, and deposition pressure demonstrating that the silver grain-size depends on each of these parameters. Adhesion of silver to polished titanium and stainless steel substrates was found to be dependent on the substrate temperature during deposition. Post deposition anneals of room-temperature deposited films were not effective for improving the adhesion. This constraint places a lower limit on the size of the grains of the silver in the as-deposited film since the grain-size increases as the temperature increases. Preliminary measurements of the bactericidal properties of silver films deposited directly onto orthopedic implants suggest that the films are effective in preventing growth of the bacterium Staphylococcus Aureus. Details of the deposition process and the bactericidal investigations are presented.
