2R-Cell~(TM): A Universal Cell for an Easy and Safe SOFC Operation

Thanks to their high power density in a wide range of temperature, anode supported thin film electrolytes are nowadays the most used in the SOFC area. Unfortunately, the anodes suffer from an important problem: they are totally destroyed when re-oxidation occurs in the anode chamber. This happens, for instance, when fuel supply inappropriately stops. Cell peripheral re-oxidation is another well known phenomenon where failures are initiated. In all cases, when re-oxidation starts, the stack quickly undergoes a fatal destruction and the SOFC system definitely falls down. Fiaxell Sari, a new company active in the SOFC area has developed and is now offering a novel anode supported thin electrolyte, made with standard NiO-ZrO_2 material, the 2R-Cell™ that provides robustness and reliability upon multi thermo and redox-cycles. Such cells have now demonstrated for thousands of cumulated hours that they withstand full redox-cycles without any failure in the anode substrate or in the thin electrolyte as described with pictures. This paper presents the electrochemical behaviour of such cells, tested over 1700 hours and 16 full redox cycles in a short stack at Hexis AG (CH). No performance degradation could be measured from the last redox-cycle till the end of the test, 800 hours later. 2R-Cell of 6 cm in diameter and with cathode of 3.7 cm has been tested in POX simulation in the open flanges test setup with Crofer interconnect. Without any sealing, a power density of 225 mW/cm~2 could be achieved with an electrical efficiency of 39.8%.
