The objective of this study is to characterise various bagasse from sugarcane varieties with regard to lignocellulose hydrolysis. The goal is selecting preferred lines with good pretreatment response in conjunction with high biomass and juice yield per hectare. In the first stage of the study, sugarcane bagasse chemical composition from 115 varieties was characterised according to NREL analysis produce. This was followed by dilute acid pretreatment at 180°C for 15 minutes, acid loading was (0.5%w/w) and at reactor loading of 30%w/v in a 14.3 ml tubular reactor. The pretreated solids were enzymatically hydrolysed at 15 FPU/g WIS. The resulting hydrolysate from both pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis were then analysed for sugars. In the second stage, 34 varieties were shortlisted as preferred candidates, and then were pretreated under five different conditions. The pretreated solids were enzymatically hydrolysed under two loading 1.5 and 15FPU/g WIS. Total carbohydrates of the bagasse varied from 54.2 to 70.7g/100g dry bagasse and lignin content from 13.6 to 21.7g/100g dry bagasse.
