Photovoltaic solar energy has a great potential of becoming a major energy source for developing countries located near the equator. Cucuta is a city located at the north-east of Colombia (7°54'N 72°29'W) and PV Systems are almost negligible in this area. Scientific and technical data analysis is required before implementing medium or large PV systems. A site assessment is performed to evaluate the best place to install a 1kW grid-tied PV System within Francisco de Paula Santander University. We used the Solar Pathfinder, PVSyst software, anisotropic models and other tools to evaluate four aspects: shading losses, distance to the monitoring room, irradiance and ease of access. We established relative weights for each aspect and made the decision based on the highest score.
