We demonstrate that electrochemically etched macroporous silicon with a pore distance of 4 urn and a pore depth of 9 μm reduces the AM1.5g photon flux-weighted front reflectance to 15 % without depositing an anti-reflection coating. This micron-scaled structure reaches the photogeneration of an ideal Lambertian light trapping scheme to within 3 %. Surface passivation by an AlO_x layer allows for lifetimes of 2 ms despite a surface area enhancement on the front side by a factor of 6.2. We attribute this finding to a more efficient field effect passivation at the steep facets of the texture.
