Multifunction Phased Array Radar(MPAR) is a multiagency initiative to reduce riskassociated with designing one type of phasedarray radar to replace the seven models of mechanicallyrotating conventional radars currentlyoperated by four federal agencies. The effortinvestigates the potential for sharing data fromapproximately 330 multifunction radars, whichwould replace about 510 single-purpose installations. The Office of the Federal Coordinator forMeteorological Services and Supporting Research(OFCM) sponsors the Working Group forMPAR and the MPAR Executive Council. During2010 the MPAR initiative advanced on severalfronts. The Executive Council reviewed severalpotential risk-reduction options and provided inputto the Interdepartmental Committee for MeteorologicalServices and Supporting Research ona recommended way forward. The WorkingGroup tracked efforts toward completing a contractfor the Technical Assessment Program, avehicle to engage industry in reducing cost andtechnical risk. The Group also completed a newUnified Research and Development plan, updatinga 2006 plan and adding risk and priority information, and updated the MPAR Risk ReductionStrategy to reflect current timelines and activities.
