The goal of accessible transportation over the past 40 years was to help people with mobilityimpairments access both public and private transportation for a more independent life style. Inrecent years, efforts have been made to apply inclusive and universal design principles toincrease access and mobility for all users including those with sensory and cognitiveimpairments. There have been and will be advances in the deployment of information andcommunication technologies (ICT) that will facilitate travel by people with sensory andcognitively impairments as a result of the revolution in micro-electronics. It is important toconsider the full spectrum of human sensory and cognitive performance when designing, anddeploying assistive technologies. Travel can often be very stressful and exacerbates cognitivestress and mental illness. It is very important that ICT system designers consider therequirements of vulnerable travelers during an emergency event to insure that appropriate realtime information reaches the end use in an accessible format. An often overlooked benefit of fullinclusion is the need for open system architecture of the communication infrastructure andsystem designs that permits interoperability across operating systems and platforms. In thefuture more and more personal communication devices that are designed for the specific needs ofthe end user will be available. These devices will let people receive information that isappropriate to their specific needs and in formats that are appropriate for their degree ofinformation processing. The underlying infrastructure needs to be adapted to ensure thataccessible information is delivered to the end user.
