Safety-critical communication protocols are suitable for implementation of Open System Distributed Engine Control (DEC) Architectures. In terms of the requirement of safety criticality several communication protocols such as TTP/C, TTEthernet, AFDX, ARINC 629, ARINC 825 and Flexray are considered for DEC systems. Characteristics of protocols like data rates, asynchronous and synchronous data transmissions and their fault hypothesis were taken into account for comparison. In addition, along with the communication protocol, selection of an appropriate topology is also an important task as it influences the reliability, redundancy management and the bandwidth utilization of the entire system. We focused on three candidate topologies and studied their implications on the above factors.
