System point of view about the use of Cold Solid Propellants (CSP) in space applications

The research of new propellants meeting the requirements of performance, cost, safety and compliant with the environmental directives always more constraining have become an objective for the launcher motors designer for the next years. For few years, universities, institutes or propellants makers have been working on such propellants at laboratory scale or on sounding rockets because these propellants seem to propose enhanced performances, to be safer (the low temperature during the preparatory phases allows to limit the hazard risks) and more ecological (e.g.: the use of H_2O_2 and aluminum, retreatment at the end of life). This paper proposes to discuss about this propellant technology from a System point of view in order to confirm or not its interest: on the one hand some performance evaluations are done to compare this technology with classical ones, and on the other hand, it tries to identify the difficulties linked to this propellant (obviously the cold environment) and proposes some solutions to solve them. In particular, some assessments are proposed concerning the implementation of a CSP motor for an operational launcher from the grain manufacturing to its operating.
