1. Our interpretation: Uniform ALD deposited Al_2O_3 barrier layers do not belong to European definition of nanomaterials, 2. No significant increase in particle count in laboratory air was observed. Migration from thin Al_2O_3 layer deposited on plastic films to typical food contact simulants exceeded limit value set for non-authorized substances in Europe, 4. Impact of simulant on migration, functional properties and surface chemistry depends on substrate and oxidizing precursor (and thus on thin film structure), 5. ALD Al_2O_3 requires top layer to protect it from stresses, to prevent migration, and to act as a sealant.
