Oh and Vanapalli (2010) proposed a simple methodology to simulate the stress versus displacement (SVD) behavior of model footings in unsaturated sands extending finite element analysis (FEA) using elastic-perfectly plastic model. The analyses were performed assuming soil as a single layer with average matric suction value (i.e. constant total cohesion and elastic modulus with respect to depth). In the present study, the proposed methodology has been extended successfully to simulate the SVD behaviors of in-situ footing (B × L = 1m × 1m) load tests in unsaturated sand. In addition, details of how to estimate the variation of total cohesion and elastic modulus with respect to matric suction, which are two key factors that influence the SVD behavior of plate load tests in unsaturated sands, are discussed.
