A major commercial development in the heart of Seoul required the excavation of a basement over 38 metres deep. The geology consisted of over 20 metres of alluvial deposits overlying variably weathered bedrock. The perimeter wall was constructed adopting diaphragm walls and the temporary lateral support provided by over 3000 temporary ground anchors. The design was initially carried out adopting a Mohr Coulomb soil model and the field observations of wall and ground movements were comparable to the design predictions. The results were then compared with predictions using a soil hardening model and conclusions drawn on an appropriate simple Mohr Coulomb that could be adopted for routine design.
