The current Computed Tomography (CT) rotor ball bearing architecture is on the edge of its capabilities for the most demanding applications (high rotational speed). Therefore an air-bearing system is designed which is suitable for coming generations. In this article it is described why and what type of air-bearings are chosen. The air bearing configuration and design is explained. Also shape and material choice of the running surfaces (race) of the air-bearings and connection of the race to the scanner rotor is described. Finally test results are presented.
