For PCS derived joints, the shear strength is about 35% of monolithic SiC values. This joint is stable with temperature and in tested environments, except in wet oxygen at 1000°C. SiC interlayer joints have shear and bend strengths that are near monolithic SiC values (about 80%). These joints are stable with temperature and oxidizing environments; however they are expensive in processing. The Ceramatec Braze joint has bend strengths that are equivalent to monolithic SiC. However, the shear strengths are somewhat reduced compared to the monolithic values, but improve with exposure with the joint strength increasing as the joint material evolves. Further study is ongoing to determine the interactions of this joint microstructure and their effects on joint strength.
