One of the first steps in many machining processes involves aligning the workpiece with axes of the machine. For a lathe, this involves aligning the workpiece with the center of rotation of the spindle. If done manually, this centering procedure can be laborious, time-intensive, and error-prone. The goal of this research is to develop a device to be used inside a machine enclosure that will align the center of a part to within 2.5 urn of the spindle center automatically in less than 3 minutes.
