摘要

Consumer health information behavior (CHIB), whichencompasses a person’s health-related information needsand the activities in which they engage in order to look for, manage, and use information related to their healthcondition, impacts a person’s ability to manage and copewith a disease. Although CHIB has been found to be bothdynamic and situational, very few studies have undertakento study this phenomenon as a process that unfolds acrosstime. This paper reports results from a longitudinal, mixedmethodstudy of the information behavior of people withtype 2 diabetes. This study aimed to discover this group’sinformation needs and information seeking practices, thefactors that motivate or impede their information seekingand use, the sources and types of information that they finduseful, and how all of these changed across time. This paperfocuses on results related to participants’ perceptionsregarding the usefulness of different sources and types ofdiabetes-related information. The findings indicate thatimportant changes took place in participants’ perceptionsregarding the usefulness of information as their diseaseprogressed, as their attitudes changed, and as theirawareness of their information needs changed. A suggestionis made to extend the definition of information behavior toencompass an earlier state (“incognizance”) in which aperson has not yet become aware that he/she has aninformation need and is, thus, less able (or unable) torecognize the potential relevance and usefulness ofinformation. Implications for the important role thatresearchers and information professionals can play inhelping to mitigate incognizance and its potentiallydevastating impacts are discussed.
