Integration of experiential learning into the library andinformation science (LIS) courses has been a theme in LISeducation, but the topic deserves renewed attention with anincreasing demand for professionals in the digital libraryfield and in light of the new initiative announced by theLibrary of Congress (LC) and the Institution of Museumand Library Services (IMLS) for national residencyprogram in digital curation. The balance between theoryand practice in digital library curricula, the challenges ofincorporating practical projects into LIS coursework, andthe current practice of teaching with hands on activitiesrepresent the primary areas of this panel discussion.The panel brings together a representative from the Libraryof Congress Office of Strategic Initiative to talk about theResidency in Digital Curation program and LIS educatorswho are actively involved in developing and teaching DLcourses with experiential components in face-to-face, hybrid,and online environments.
