Safety Impact and Driver Acceptance of an Integrated Crash Warning System for Heavy Trucks

This paper provides the results of an analysis conducted to assess the safety impact and driver acceptanceof an integrated vehicle-based crash warning system for heavy trucks based on driving data collectedfrom a field operational test. The system incorporates three functions that warn the driver of an imminentrear-end crash, lane-change crash, or unintentional lane departure. The safety impact is assessed in termsof observed changes in driving performance, driver attention, and response to system alerts. Driveracceptance is assessed through subjective feedback from the drivers in terms of ease of use, perceivedusefulness, and advocacy. 18 professional drivers participated in the field test by driving the instrumentedtrucks on their normal work route for a period of 10 months. In the first two months, designated as thebaseline period, the subjects performed their naturalistic driving with the system turned off while the dataacquisition system collected their performance data. In the last eight months, designated as the treatmentperiod, the system was turned on and provided the subjects with visual and auditory crash warningsignals. The integrated system has the potential to help professional drivers maintain their lanepositioning, increase turn signal usage, and reduce their exposure to certain driving conflict scenarios.Moreover, the system did not have a negative influence on driver attention. Most drivers felt that thesystem provided a positive safety benefit and was easy to use.
