Disordered swallowing, or dysphagia, is a common problem seen in patients undergoing treatment for cancer, stroke and neurodegenerative illnesses. The methods currently used for diagnosis, however, are qualitative or based on expensive equipment. Swallowing accelerometry is a promising low-cost, quantitative and noninvasive tool for the evaluation of swallowing. The clinical use of this method is prevented by technical and practical limitations including the fact that there are no consensus in the literature concerning the positioning of the transducers during the exam, while some researcher uses the tireoid notch, others uses in the cricoid. This work describes the comparative analysis of the acceleration measured in these two positions in the anteroposterior and superior-inferior axis separately and as a vectorial sum in normal subjects during the swallowing of saliva and water volumes of 5,10 and 20 mL. The physiological effect of the increasing values of water volume was more adequately described in the thyroid than in the cricoid. The signal amplitude was also higher in the thyroid (p<0.003). We concluded that the positioning of the transducers in the thyroid is the more adequate choice for the objective evaluation of the pharyngeal elevation during deglutition.
