摘要

The presentation will provide a site overview and update on monitoring activities at theTennessee Products Superfund Site. From September 2005 to September 2007 a combinedremoval and interim capping remedy was performed on a reach of the ChattanoogaCreek, which empties into the Tennessee River, just north of Chattanooga, TN.The Site consists of the former Tennessee Products coal carbonization facility, whichoperated from 1918 until 1987, and its associated coal-tar dumping areas along an approximate2.5-mile reach of the Creek and its floodplain. Site contaminants includepesticides, volatile organic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, metals, andpolychlorinated biphenyls. The primary contaminant of concern was coal-tar residual.Approximately 107,300 tons of stabilized sediment was excavated from ChattanoogaCreek channel and transported for disposal at an off-site landfill. A protective isolationbarrier constructed with AquaBlok? was installed over 5,750 linear feet of Creek channelto address potential re-contamination from non-aqueous phase liquid encountered in thesubsurface.Since it is known that NAPL exists in the subsurface and no further source controlmeasures have been implemented at the site, the capping portion of the remedy was consideredan interim measure at the time of implementation. In 2008, a sampling programwas initiated to monitor the performance of the cap and determine the potential effectivelife of the interim remedy. The EPA’s Office of Research & Development worked withState and U.S. EPA Region 4 representatives and retained Dr. Reible (University ofTexas) as a consultant to perform sampling and provide analytical results. Although analysisof monitoring results is ongoing, this presentation will provide preliminary data thatindicate the interim remedy is performing as anticipated and is likely to continue to providea meaningful protection from ongoing habitat damage and exposure.
