A 60 GHz on-chip dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) with a simple rectangular configuration is proposed. A rectangular geometry is free from the sidewall slopes of the micromachined fabrication process that is associated with curved geometries such as cylindrical and hemispherical. The antenna has been simulated using CST microwave studio. A dual-band rectangular DRA with a coplanar waveguide (CPW) feed has been designed to operate at the millimetre-wave (mm-wave) frequency. The DRA has been excited using a square slot with optimized dimensions. A single high-resistivity silicon wafer has been chosen to design the DRA, which results in a configuration suitable for micromachining technology and compatible with on-chip systems. The on-chip DRA exhibits dual impedance bandwidths of 4.9% and 5.7% and having maximum gains of 7.1 dBi and 7.8 dBi at 60 and 70GHz, respectively. Furthermore, it exhibits a radiation efficiency of ~83% and cross-polarization of -48 dB.
