The blood brain barrier (BBB) is a specialized membrane that covers the blood vessel in the central nervous system. This structure regulates the passage of certain substances for keeping the homeostasis into the brain. But this selective permeability is a drawback in treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, because the BBB prevents the passage of drugs to the affected brain cells. The use of focused ultrasound (FUS) has proven to be a promising tool for the BBB disruption in specific zones, which improves the release of drugs. One of the problems of FUS is the high attenuation of cranium. This paper presents a study of the acoustic field pattern and the disruption of the BBB in rat's brain for different diameters of craniotomies. These experiments were carried out in rats wistar. A 2 MHz FUS transducer of 10 mm radius and a focal length of 20 mm was used. It was found that a craniotomy of 1 cm allows the focus to be on the substantia nigra, our area of interest, without excessive field distortion and transmission losses.
